What does it mean to be born again?

Misconceptions

1. I can get to God through good behavior.

One serious misconception, for believers and non-believers, is that our salvation is dependent on what we do. Many believe that behavior determines our salvation.

2. I need to stay committed to God to keep my salvation.

Many Christians believe that staying committed to God is what they need to keep their salvation. Some “re-commit” their lives to God over and over. Others just try harder and harder.

Truth

1. God breathes life into Man.

Genesis 2:7 – The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

2. Sin separates Man from God, who is Life.

Romans 5:12 – Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man (i.e., Adam), and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.

The act of eating from the tree was the original sin (DISBELIEF). It is a declaration of independence from God. However, man cannot live without God. God, who is Life, created man to be in relationship and receive life from Him. He breathed LIFE into man and without LIFE, death follows. Just like a fish, taken out of water, will die, because it was not created to be out of water. God created fish to live in the water and He created man to be with God.

3. This separation caused God (life) to depart, which results in spiritual death.

Once life departs, death follows. God cannot be with SIN because He is perfect. Therefore, in the presence of sin, God departs resulting in spiritual death. Now, Man is under death & spiritual bondage (John 8:44).

John 8:44 – You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Not only did Life depart, but I got connected to Satan which brought me spiritual bondage. And this spiritual bondage brought all kinds of problems I face even today. All spiritual, physical, emotional, mental, problems resulted because of my spiritual bondage under Satan. On top of this bondage, the curse altered my identity so that I became a child of the devil.

Sin & bondage results in all problems.

The Solution: Jesus solves . . .

Jesus solves the problem of sin by taking my sin on the cross, and taking the punishment that no one could pay.

2 Corinthians 5:21 – God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

The problem of death is taken care of by the resurrected life of Jesus.

Romans 6:8-9 – Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.

If Christ lives with me & in me, death that has no mastery over Jesus has no mastery over me!

I used to live in Satan’s kingdom and was under Satan’s Rule. Through Jesus’ death, I was freed from Satan’s bondage. Through His resurrection life, I have been transplanted to a new place, a new identity, and a new life. Through Jesus, I am freed from Satan’s rule to live in Jesus & the Holy Spirit. Through the resurrection, Jesus established His throne. He is my King, so I no longer have to live under Satan’s control.

Ephesians 2:1-2,4-6 – As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air (i.e., Satan), the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.

1 John 3:8b – The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

The Need for Salvation

Jesus is the Life

John 14:6: Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’

Jesus comes to answer my greatest problem. My fundamental problem is not that I am “bad” and need to be “good.” The real issue is that I was “dead” and needed “life.” Jesus was and is that life.

John 3:16: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Man’s greatest need is the LIFE that was lost in the garden.

Jesus Resurrected

He was raised to life from death. This is important for me to understand why I need a new life. In discussing Christ as the only way to salvation, I cannot discuss this apart from the resurrection of Christ. Yes, Christ claims to be God & prophesizes His death, but He prophesizes His resurrection. Anyone can claim to be God or say he’s going to die. However, with Jesus, He prophesized His resurrection and He really died and rose again. His claims to be God, His teachings, and all the Scriptures teachings concerning Him were affirmed and true.

REALITY

I need to be born again.

John 1:12 – Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

Receiving “New Birth” is not through Behavior. Receiving “New Birth” is through Believing.

I need to believe in my new identity.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

If you believe what Jesus died for you, and accept him into your heart, you will be saved. You will receive the Life of Christ into your life. The only thing you need to do is to believe and enjoy!

Water Bottle Illustration

Identity of the bottle is determined by what is inside. So if water is inside the bottle, it is considered a water bottle. If juice is in a water bottle, it is now identified as juice. Identity is based on what is inside & its worth is calculated by its contents. My identity is determined by Jesus, who is inside me. So if Jesus, who is holy, perfect, and infinitely valuable, lives in me, then I am also holy, perfect, and infinitely valuable.
